Here are the most recent updates to the site:

August 21, 2009:

Elizabeth Phillips wrote and submitted a grant application to the Portland Development Commission (PDC) which has been accepted, and work is beginning. This grant will help us obtain a secure on-site storage shed, repair the gazebo and several markers, and more improvements. The arch above the cemetery gate has been temporarily removed to facilitate the work crews, and will be put back up once work has been completed.

This is great news, and we want to thank Elizabeth and the PDC.

In other news, Boy Scout Troop 852 will be doing clean-up at the cemetery on October 3rd. Anyone who wishes to help would be greatly appreciated.

June 25, 2009:

Just a head's up -- Craig will be at the cemetery on Sunday to continue the never ending mowing of the grass, provided said grass isn't too wet to mow.

In other news, a youth group sponsored by the Life Fellowship Evangelical Church in Portland came out on Monday and did quite a bit of clean-up work, and we want to extend a big thank you to them.

June 22, 2009:

The clean-up on Saturday went great! The dumpster was courtesy of Arrow Sanitation and a voucher from Metro, so a big thanks to them. Thanks also to everyone who came... it is very much appreciated. Photos to follow.

Also note: since the ground has been rather damp lately, the big mower hasn't been able to cut the grass (it just lays it down, instead). Once the ground dries out, the grass will be mowed. Thank you for your understanding.

June 2, 2009:

A big clean-up has been scheduled for June 20, 2009!! The awesome Elizabeth Phillips is leading the clean-up, and she plans on being there from 9am to 4pm that day. We'll be renting a large dumpster which will be on site that weekend. If you can help in any way -- your time, a donation (the dumpster itself will be at least $225 to rent), etc. -- it would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the event, please let us know.

May 12, 2009:

Craig (HCC board member) will be out at the cemetery again most of the day on Sunday, May 17, 2009, to try to finish mowing before Memorial Day weekend. Every little bit helps, so anything you could do to help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Once again, I'd like to mention we are looking for a new groundskeeper. This is a volunteer position. If you're interested, please contact us for further details. Thank you.

April 17, 2009:

Craig (HCC board member) will be out at the cemetery most of the day on Sunday, April 19, 2009, if anyone wants to come out and help do some clean up. Thanks! April 8, 2009: First up, before I forget -- here's a link to the HCC by-laws. The address I gave out at the meeting was incorrect -- those show the old cemetery association's by-laws. I apologize.

On to yesterday's meeting:

For those who weren't able to attend today's meeting, there basically didn't end up being a vote, but if there had been, votes in favor of Glenora staying far outweighed any opposition. So, no change in who runs at the cemetery.

The reason the vote became a non-issue -- Christoff Miller, who was to head the replacement board, is unfortunately in the hospital and would be unable to run the cemetery. Our thoughts are with him and his family.

We want to thank everyone who sent proxy votes and who attended the meeting. Some good ideas were brought up, and we will work to address those as soon as we can.

I've uploaded some photos from the meeting.

Speaking of that, Linda Lathrop continues to post a whole bunch of photos to our new Flickr account. She's added several more tombstone photos, plus photos from some clean up work on April 4th. Check out the various photosets to see what's available.

March 31, 2009: Two things:

First up -- be sure to go to the meeting at Kenton Fire Hall in Portland on April 7th at 2pm to vote regarding a possible transfer of the run of the cemetery to another entity. If you aren't familiar with what's going on, please read entries below this one, and join our discussion list. If you can't attend, please contact us to find out how to send a proxy vote. This is a very important meeting, so we really hope you'll get involved.

In other news, we've set up a Flickr account for the cemetery so we can add photos to the site much faster. Flickr hosts photos, for those unfamiliar with the service. So far, Linda Lathrop has uploaded several photos (major thanks, Linda!):

Linda has more photos to upload, so be sure to check the photosets as she creates them. I'll be incorporating the tombstone photos into the tombstone photos section of our site here soon, to make them easier to find.

March 13, 2009: Some people have asked about the ruts in the grass in the cemetery. They were caused by a company digging a grave getting stuck in the mud during some bad rain, and will be repaired as soon as possible.

Also note: there was a meeting which was supposed to be a non-meeting yesterday (March 12) regarding a possible takeover of the cemetery (see the entry below this one). That meeting was supposed to last a couple of minutes and then adjourn to the rescheduled time next month, April 7th at 2pm at Kenton Fire Hall in Portland. It went for 2.5 hours, and since we were told there wasn't going to be a meeting, we only had one person there to discuss the issues on our behalf. HCC board members Glenora and Craig we not there because they were told there would be no reason to attend by the lawyer who called the meeting.

Regarding some of the issues raised:

  • The records are perfectly safe, and have been well protected, as is the mower. It is not in disrepair, as some have suggested. It only had a flat tire, which has been fixed.
  • Some people want to have local access so they themselves can go through the records. The records are delicate and in some cases a century or more old, and would not hold up to general perusal. Information is spread out throughout these files and books, and often cannot be simply viewed to find what one needs. It takes research to put it all together. We are working on digitizing them, but the records are on thousands of card index files and many books, are full of errors, and are often incomplete. We inherited these records, and cannot be responsible for any incomplete records from the years before we acquired them.
  • Glenora, president of Historic Columbian Cemetery, is not "bed ridden" as someone claimed.
  • If you call Glenora, please note it will sometimes (but not always) be answered by the answering machine, as it is a private residence.
  • People are required to have either a deed or a receipt for any unused cemetery plots they may have at the cemetery. Again, we are not responsible for lost or incomplete records from before 2005, though Glenora does her very best to research any and all requests for information.
  • The license for the cemetery is current, and will be renewed before the end of the month. The delay was due in part to adjusting to fit new board members. No "fines" have been assessed by the cemetery licensing board, as someone alleged. All costs paid were normal yearly fees.
  • The issue of mowing the cemetery was also raised. Please know it would cost $3500 each time to have the grounds mowed by a professional company. That is well beyond what the cemetery can afford.
  • We did have it professionally mowed before Memorial Day last year, and it cost $1250, as they gave a one-time discount (it cannot be repeated). Please note: it takes at least two days each time the grounds are mowed. and is dependent on the weather.

If you have any concerns regarding the cemetery, please contact Glenora. She is more than willing to discuss any issues you may have, and to clear up any possible misconceptions. Please keep in mind, this is completely volunteer-run, and we need support. If you would like to volunteer, please let us know. We'd love your help.

February 16, 2009:

Some of you who have family members buried in the cemetery may have received letters regarding a meeting in March to vote to transfer the control of the cemetery from Glenora Chamberlin (HCC's current president) to Christoff Miller. Please know this has been done without our consent or knowledge (we didn't find out until a few days ago). Also know Mr. Miller does not have any family members buried in Columbian, and the cemetery by-laws require it to be a descendent. Mrs. Chamberlin is a descendent.

Mr. Miller has had no contact with us since 2005 is not knowledgeable nor is he involved in the ongoing maintenance and records keeping at the cemetery. He has never had any position with the cemetery except that of an occasional volunteer, and hasn't had that in over three years.

There are also some apparent misunderstandings regarding the cemetery. If you didn't get a letter (which was not sent out by us) or have any questions, please contact us, or join our low volume discussion email list.

Also note: we are organizing another clean up at the cemetery for this coming weekend. Please join our email list. It is updated much more often than this web site.

February 15, 2008:

From Glenora, HCC head honcho lady:

Monday Feb. 18, is an informal day of clean up at HCC. My son Craig will be there sawing branches and the wood is free to those who want it. Please bring garbage bags, and for those who can, pickups to haul debris.

Please, get out and do whatever you can. Remember that we operate with virtually no funds and at the moment no caretaker. It's everyone's responsibility to help.

December 7, 2007:

Our groundskeeper, has decided to move on to other things, so we are looking for a new volunteer groundskeeper and/or parttime sexton. If you're interested in learning more, please contact us. Thanks!

August 30, 2007:

A note from us and our grounds keeper:

We want to thank the anonymous person or people who have been doing their own clean-ups at the cemetery. It has been a big help, and your work is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

April 6, 2007: A few things from our grounds keeper:

The cemetery's gate will be open for Easter. And if someone would like to work on the cemetery they could pick up all the old artificial flowers except any brand new ones. Also they could carefully spade up around the roses and get the grass out of them. They only need to dig up about a foot around them.

March 31, 2007: We have a clean-up day set for Sunday, April 22, 2007, any time of day. Our caretaker - will be there all day. It also happens to be Earth Day, which works well.

Please bring any tools, weed-eaters, or other equipment you can. Bags, and hauling will be taken care of. Keep in mind, we have no power...yet.

Tell those you know, and if this day is successful we'll set up others, hopefully more before Memorial Day.

July 8, 2006: I just wanted to send a quick note to explain about the recent issues regarding the maintenance of the cemetery grounds. Our grounds keeper recently moved and had to live elsewhere for a bit, and wasn't able to do his usual maintenance. But he is mostly back on the "job" (he's a volunteer, of course, so he doesn't get paid), and you should see things get back to normal here soon.

We apologize, but it couldn't be avoided. Thanks to those who have offered assistance. Our groundskepper is still the ringleader on maintenance issues, so we'll let you know when he can organize another clean up. It should be soon.

Again, please remember this whole thing is all volunteer run. That means outside issues can and do come up from time to time. We can always use more volunteers, so if you want to make a contributions, whether it be time, equipment, money, etc., please let us know.

May 26, 2006: We have some nifty new photos, and other news. First up, we want to thank Erik Mason, an Eagle Scout candidate from Vancouver, WA, for doing such great work repairing and cleaning several tombstones of civil war veterans. We hope to have photos from Eric soon.

Gary and Linda Takis took several cub scouts from Pack 437 out to the cemetery on May 22, 2006, to place the American flags on veterans' graves, do a clean up, and to do a flag raising ceremony. You can view the photos here of their activities. We also want to thank Robin Sinclair and Greg Hays at Ahern Rentals for donating the time and effort to re-string the flagpole. Great job to all involved!

Finally, our grounds keeper has been a busy beaver at the cemetery. He took some photos on May 5, 2006, of the grounds, so you can see how far the cemetery has come. View the photos here.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the improvement of the cemetery grounds. Your assistance has been invaluable and greaty appreciated. Thank you, all.

March 3, 2006: Work parties will begin in March, weather permitting. Please call the cemetery's grounds keeper at (number removed) if you'd like to be included. Any and all help is appreciated. October 26, 2005: Some significant and exciting changes have been made to the cemetery grounds! The cemetery is finally getting some long needed grounds keeping maintenance. Our groundskepper has been volunteering his time, and is doing a great job. He's also put out quite a bit of his own money to pay for tool rentals, gas, etc., so if you could help out and make a donation, it would be greatly appreciated.

For a few before and after photos and for information on how to donate, please see the before and after - grounds keeping update page.

August 21, 2005: We now have most of the cemetery records, and we should have the rest of the records soon. We're working to bring them up-to-date, which will take some time.

In other news, we've registered a new domain name for this site, and have changed a few things, to reflect our new status as the group which now runs the cemetery, instead of just the 'families/friends of' group we've been running. Everything else, including our postal address, email addresses, etc., will remain the same. Both domains -- columbiancemetery.org. Both domains -- fohcc.org and columbiancemetery.org -- point to the same site, and both will remain fully functional.

Also, we've now added a Cafepress online store, where you can buy Columbian Cemetery calendars, t-shirts, coffee mugs, bags, and a bunch of other stuff, all to benefit the cemetery. Buy some nifty stuff, and help us make the cemetery better. We appreciate the support!

July 29, 2005: Our temporary license for running Columbian is in place, and we'll have the final version once the paperwork has been completed. We'll also have the records fully transfered within a few days.

We want to thank everyone for their continued support. It's been a long road, but well worth it.

Also note -- we still have copies of the Memorial Day video and DVD, so if you're interested, see the post below.

June 12, 2005: Order the video of the Memorial Day event on DVD or VHS! We've added the option to order the video, so if you missed the event or if you want a keepsake from the event, please order it in the format(s) of your choice. The cost is only $10 each, including shipping.

May 31, 2005:

See photos from our Memorial Day event! The flagpole was rededicated with a new flag (thanks to Gerald Caldwell and the American Legion St. Johns Post #98!), Civil War reenactors provided the color guard, bagpipers played, and a bunch of other nifty things. Thanks to everyone who took part!

May 12, 2005:

Have plans for Memorial Day, May 30? We'll be having a flag dedication and other inspiring events at the cemetery! Everyone is invited to attend.

May 30, 2005
The flag will be raised at 11 AM

Color Guard and re-enactment Harold Slavik, Commander
Color Guard, flag raising, musket saltue and more: Sons of Union of Union Veterans of the Civil War

There will be a bugler, a bagpiper, and chairs to sit on. Flags will be on Veterans' graves (Boy Scout Troop #71 is placing them for us before the event), and American Legion Post 98 has refurbished the flag pole and is donating a new flag. Programs will be available when you come, listing our known Veterans. More details soon. January 31, 2005:

A couple of updates -- added link to Linda Lathrop's page Roses of Columbian Cemetery which highlights the many roses to be found at the cemetery (thanks, Linda!), and fixed the link in the right-hand menu to the KOIN article about the vandalism at the cemetery. A bigger update will be up soon with several more tombstone photos.

We'd also like to thank Tom and Meredith Gilbert for all the good things they're doing for the cemetery. They've gone out of their way to help, and it is greatly appreciated.

November 23, 2004: The photos and summary of the bird seed bells hanging event are up! Please see the Bird Seed Bells page. October 28, 2004: Mark your calendars if you want to participate -- the bird seed bells will go up on November 21, 2004, at 1:30pm, at the cemetery. For more information, please see the Bird Seed Bells page. September 12, 2004: We'll be hanging bird seed bell ornaments at the cemetery this Christmas to honor those buried there. Click here if you would like to "purchase" one or more of these ornaments! They're environment-friendly (the birds will love them!), and it's a great way to remember loved ones this coming holiday season. August 9, 2004: Several people are getting together on the 14th for an informal clean-up at the cemetery, starting at 10am. If you're interested in helping clean up, want to take pictures and/or help transcribe tombstones, visit a grave, or just want to visit the cemetery, this would be a great time. July 23, 2004: KOIN Channel 6 aired the story about the cemetery as the lead at 11pm. You can read the article based on the story at KOIN's site. This story highlights how very important and urgent it is to fix the problems at the cemetery -- put up a solid fence, add lighting, fix the stones, etc. July 22, 2004: Good news! Portland television station KOIN (Channel 6) has done a story on the cemetery problems, and should air either tonight or tomorrow (Friday, July 23rd). Look for them to highlight the various problems at the cemetery, plus interview Linda Lathrop, who was there when the news crew arrived. We'll have a recap, etc., on this after it airs. July 17, 2004: Below are some pictures taken this week at the cemetery. They show a few of the places the cemetery could really use help to maintain and restore it to what it should be -- a beautiful, peaceful resting place. If you would like to help, see the info just below the photos on how to "adopt" a plot or area of the cemetery, or if you'd like to make a donation, please see our Future Projects and Donation Info page for details, and thank you for the much needed support.

Thanks to Linda Lathrop for the photos. Please click on each image to see the bigger version.

July 11, 2004:

We had some wonderful suggestions on how to get work done at the cemetery. One was immediately adopted, and we hope more of you will join in. That is letting people take an area from a plot to whatever size they can handle, and tend it as their schedule allows. If you have family there, it could be that area, or anything you feel you can do. Please try to include mowing, or somehow getting it hacked down if possible. And as always, leave the cleaning of markers to professionals, although light brushing and washing off with water is fine. We'll get a map up and list what areas people choose. Please, find time and energy to do whatever you can. Nothing is too small to be appreciated, and together, this can be of so much help. June 11, 2004: ODOT will be holding a meeting to discuss the I5 expansion project on June 16th from 4pm to 8pm at the Kenton Firehouse at 8105 Brandon in Portland. Please see ODOT's site for details. April 10, 2004: Mrs. Gerald (Marlene) Roth, the current secretary for the cemetery and wife to the caretaker, has shared the records on the burials through 1985. She will be working on those for the later years. As soon as possible these will be posted to the site, as will the maps. Meanwhile, they're a wonderful help to the research for the National Historic Register. We thank Mrs. Roth, her help is most appreciated. April 4, 2004: We are applying for the National Historic Register for Columbian. While it should qualify, cemeteries are the most difficult to do, as we're applying on the history of the people buried there and the design of the grounds. If anyone has old photos we could copy, that would be very helpful. Histories of the people and their relationship to the area are also important. This would be a great deal of help in saving Columbian and in drawing attention. If you have anything that might be of help, please let us know via the contact form (the best option) or at families@fohcc.org. Thank you. March 19, 2004: Our summary of the March 9 meeting with ODOT:

A meeting was held March 9 with ODOT about their plans that could affect Columbian. They listened to our concerns, but it will be some time before final decisions are made. They are in what they call the impact phase, which is hearing and studying how the project could impact adjacent locations by any means. We had a good turn out of our people, and the consensus was clear that no impact is the only acceptable choice for the families. However, there is much to be done in hopes of making that reality. They asked that all who have opinions send them in. They can be mailed, emailed, or phoned to Kate Deane or anyone on the I-5 Delta to Lombard Project.

We are also in need of more history of the cemetery to present, and would appreciate anything people might have on the cemetery and the people buried there. There will be future meetings which we'll post on this site. Please email the site with any questions you might have and we'll try to answer them. Preserving Columbian in all ways is a must, and we all need to work together.

Please see ODOT's web site for more information on the expansion.

January 10, 2004: Hi, folks. We're still here, and we both apologize for not having updated the site recently. We have two willing volunteers, and as soon as we get organized, things will be updated once again. Thank you for your patience while we deal with our health issues. August 26, 2003: We're looking for a volunteer to help with the web site -- mainly adding data (obituaries, bios, etc.) to the existing design. If you're interested and have a good grasp of HTML (that is, you know how to do it by hand, and not with something like FrontPage which does the HTML for you) and know how to tranfer files via FTP, it would be a big help to us and to those looking for information via this site.

The person who maintains the site, Celine, has health issues which prevent her from getting up information in a timely manner, and we have a lot of info yet to go on the site. You would get full credit for your work as a contributor, and would be helping many people in many ways.

If you're interested in volunteering and can devote a few hours a week to the site (how much time would be completely up to you), please let us know at families@fohcc.org. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

August 9, 2003: We've added a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page which will hopefully answer some of the more often asked questions we get. August 7, 2003:
We've added a new email list to let you know when this site has been updated with new information. It's free, and the only email you'll receive will be notification of updates (in other words, no list chatter). Click on the button to the right to subscribe.
August 3, 2003: There has been a recent rash of vandalism at the cemetery, with many stones knocked over and broken. We are working on ways to make the cemetery more secure, and ways to fix the stones. Please see the Photos of Vandalism page for more details. If you would be interested in helping us or donating funds to assist, please see the Future Projects and Donation Info page. Thanks! July 6, 2003: I've changed the guestbook to a new server in an effect to combat spam, which was severely polluting the old guestbook, and I was constantly having to delete bad entries. Let's hope this new guestbook will be better. Old entries are still viewable. June 21, 2003: A few new bios have been added:

More bios are yet to be added.

April 6, 2003: Added 5 new obituaries (the end of the list). Several more to come. April 5, 2003: Added 13 new obituaries (the end of the list). Several more to come. March 29, 2003: Added 5 new obituaries (the end of the list). Several more to come. March 24, 2003: Added 10 new obituaries (the end of the list). Several more to come. March 15, 2003: Sorry for the lack of updates. The two of us who work on the site have been ill. Look for more obituaries, bios, photos, etc., in the near future.

Added: a link to an overhead photo from Portlandmaps.com to the Maps, Weather, And Other Info page.

January 11, 2003: The new Obituaries section is up. We are in the process of adding several obits, so please check that page for additions over the coming week. January 10, 2003: Added one bio -- William P. Massey (thank you to Mr. Keith Riley for the submission).

We're working on adding several obituaries, so please look for those as they're added this weekend and early next week.

November 17, 2002: Added two bios -- Clara Pansy Edwards (thank you to Claudia Vickery for the submission) and William W. Woodside (thank you to Eileen Chamberlin for the submission). November 10, 2002: Added a biography of John Mock. Thank you to P. H. Mock for the submission. October 8, 2002: Thanks to the very helpful Mystic Rose, several mistakes have been corrected in the Tombstones section. The corrections were mainly typos, photos which didn't display properly, etc. Thanks again to Mystic Rose for taking the time to proofread... it is greatly appreciated. September 12, 2002: I've added three more tombstone photos/transcriptions, thanks to Jane Martin (JMartinhi@aol.com). July 1, 2002: Katie Kirk has written a nice article about her Sunday With The Helsers. There are Helsers buried in the Columbian, and Katie was given a relating baby book by a rare book dealer in NY. That book led to Katie meeting with several Helsers at a family reunion in Portland yesterday. Read the article... it's really an interesting story. We'll have more on the Helsers as we are able to put it online. June 30, 2002: More tombstone photos/transcriptions, thanks to Katie Kirk: June 29, 2002: Thanks to the very spiffy Katie Kirk and her wonderful photos, I've added some tombstone photos and transcriptions:

Also added -- new views of the following stones:

And I went out on a limb and actually alphabetized the Tombstones - G page.

June 15, 2002: 35 new photos from Katie Kirk! - more cemetery beauty via this talented photographer.

March 10, 2002:

Many new tombstone photos - too many to list.
